Electromagnetic mass drivers for orbital mobility

OBA Space develops orbital electromagnetic launchers that use electrical energy to move payloads in orbit, from in-orbit demonstration to satellite deployment and reusable infrastructure.

From flight evidence to orbital infrastructure

Reaching orbit is only the first step

Rideshare launches deliver satellites to shared orbits, not always to their final destination. Moving between orbits still costs propellant, mass and time.

OBA Space develops electromagnetic acceleration systems that use electrical energy to move payloads in orbit, in three stages.

The first electromagnetic mass driver to operate under space conditions

A CubeSat mission designed to accelerate small test payloads with a 0.3 m electromagnetic mass driver and measure velocity, energy and spacecraft response in orbit. Developed within the ESA BIC Andalusia incubation programme.

How it works

Electrical energy instead of chemical propellant

A coil is energised, a strong magnetic field is generated and the payload is accelerated linearly, without chemical propellant during the acceleration.

Multi-stage acceleration

Sequential electromagnetic stages designed for controlled energy transfer.

Pulsed-power delivery

Controlled storage and delivery of energy to each acceleration stage.

A new deployment option towards VLEO

OBA Ampere is an electromagnetic deployment system designed for integration into orbital transfer vehicles and rocket upper stages. A controlled impulse sends small satellites from shared LEO orbits towards Very Low Earth Orbit, closer to Earth for sharper imagery and lower latency.

About OBA Space

Electromagnetic acceleration for orbital mobility

OBA Space is a Spanish space technology company founded in 2024 in Málaga by engineer and technology entrepreneur Carlos Martín. We develop electromagnetic launchers to make orbital transport more efficient.

  • Vision: enable more efficient orbital transport by accelerating payloads with electrical energy, reducing the propellant needed.
  • We work with CIEMAT, the University of Málaga and the University of Seville, within the ESA BIC Andalusia incubation programme.
